The decor is traditional Mexican style with woven leather seats and bright colors. Just keeping walking north along the waterfront and you’ll find Pancho’s Backyard. In 2014, the cruise port handled over 3,3 million passengers. In 2017, this number reached 3,6 million, ranking Cozumel the world's leading cruise ship tourism destination. In October 2015, the port hosted the second "FCCA Cruise Conference and Trade Show" (Oct 5-9).

Best Shopping in Cozumel
For finding the right spot, we recommend just checking out the menus as you pass. Most restaurants have menus posted outside where you can see if it fits what you want to eat and your budget. But if you’re anywhere near the ports or water, you’ll find all sorts of options. International PierRight next to the Puerta Maya Pier, but just to the north, is the International Pier.

Every time I visit I find something new, so this post will detail some unique and fun experiences you can have at this fantastic stop along your cruise. What’s the number one thing you should do when visiting Cozumel? If you’re looking to enjoy a full beach/pool day, there are a ton of beach clubs from which to choose. The International Pier is the middle-island cruise ship port. You’ll probably dock here if you’re cruising with Royal Caribbean or Celebrity. The third Cozumel cruise ship pier was built by Carnival Corporation and serves exclusively its brand companies' vessels.
Best Things to Do in Cozumel Cruise Port: Everything to Know
Chichen Itza (recently named one of the 7 wonders of the world) and Tulum are the main Mayan sites you can see. It’s an incredible experience to swim with the rays at Stingray Beach. If you rent a vehicle you can just drive around to see the different beaches to see which is best for what you want your beach day to be like. The eastern side of the island is rocky and exposed to the open ocean, but there are still some hidden away spots that are perfect for a beach day.
This terminal is located within walking distance of San Miguel downtown and its main attractions, shops, bars, and restaurants. The cruise lines such as Disney, NCL, MSC, Oceania, Silversea, Marella Cruises, and several others normally dock here (this can change, though, so always check beforehand). It has restaurants, bars, and shops, including the usual cruise port staples like Del Sol and Diamonds International.

The waterfront shops and restaurants offer more explorations. Because Cozumel has evolved to become a major tourist hub with almost all cruise lines featuring this once sleepy island in their western Caribbean itineraries. Some of the cruise companies have partnered with the island’s government and developed the piers into stunning areas that feature all the tourist attractions that cruisers love. There are often many cruise ship passengers in port, so things book up quickly. You’ll leave a deposit with your reservation and pay the balance once you arrive (credit cards are accepted). The official shore excursions offered by the cruise line are generally available to book in advance and do sell out.
The park has a small beach sloping to the water that’s ideal for smaller kids, but most of the shore is rocky and requires steps to go down to snorkel. If you aren’t docked at the International Pier, then you won’t be able to access this area. Cruise Critic is not a booking agent and does not charge any service fees to users of our site. Visitors can also enjoy the Navigation Museum which is the old lighthouse keeper’s home. There they will learn about the island’s rich history of Mayans and pirates that sailed the Caribbean waters. You don’t’ even have to leave the cruise terminal to find places to shop, but do yourself and the Cozumel locals a favor by venturing out and shopping from local vendors. T-shirts and trinkets are incredible affordable and I haven’t found shop owners to be too pushy compared to other ports. If you want to enjoy the most of Cozumel on your cruise, you’ll need a proper way to get around.
Puerta Maya
If you love food, you’ll be happy to learn that Cozumel has some fabulous places to eat. If you’re like me, when I travel, I want to make sure to sample the best authentic food I can find. After you leave your ship, you’ll find a lush garden full of flowers and plants and the most extensive shopping mall out of all three ports. There are at least 50 shops plus pop-up kiosk-type vendor stands. Leaving the ship, kiosks and vendors will filter you through the Punta Langosta Mall full of shops and restaurants.
In 2015, Carnival Cruise ships alone brought in over 1.7 million visitors, nearly half the total number of cruise visitors each year. The pier is more than just a place to disembark the ship – it’s a destination in itself, with restaurants, bars, stores and entertainment. Due to the large number of cruise liners coming to Cozumel daily, Cozumel cruise port consists of 3 cruise terminals, located within walking/short driving distance of each other. As much as this is true (most of the time), the Editor has been on Carnival ships docking at the International Terminal. And, as shown in the photo above, Carnival ships may also dock at the Punta Langosta Terminal.
Not many cruisers venture up to the northern part of the islands to see this family-run pearl farm, but you should. After seeing how the pearls are grown and harvested you can snorkel out to see the pearl hatchery. While snorkeling you can see an underwater life-size Virgen de Guadalupe statue. This is also part of Chankanaab Park which is open from 9am to 5pm. These slow-moving creatures are rarely seen in the wild so this excursion offers you the ability to get up close and personal with these “Mermaids of the Sea”. There are great beaches, plenty of shaded loungers and hammocks, a pristine lagoon, alligators, a seal and sea lion show, dolphins, manatees, and so much more.
The expansive port is beautifully designed and features plenty of shops. Puerta Maya boasts of at least 50 shopping outlets and additional 15 stands that sell authentic Mayan souvenirs. The shopping at this port is better than at the international port. Among the shops in the port are some recognizable names such as Del Sol, Dufry, Diamond International, Milano and Piranha Joes.
Sometimes, ships will have to anchor just offshore if it’s a very busy day with 7 or 8 cruise ships coming in. In these cases the ships will tender passengers to some of the smaller piers near Puerta Maya. There’s a reason it’s one of the most visited cruise ports in the world. The International Pier is three miles south, and then Puerta Maya is the furthest outside of town, nearly five miles away. From Puerta Maya, it’s too far to walk into town, but you’re closer to the beach clubs.
Most people gravitate towards the west side of Cozumel because of San Miguel, the many beach clubs, and all the three cruise ports along the coast. Besides the archaeological tours and shore excursions, many activities, which can also be enjoyed on your own. However, be aware that some activities like the Dolphin Discovery, which do not allow walk-in cruise passengers and if you try to book online the website will redirect to your cruise line. But many other activities can easily be enjoyed on your own.
